Canam Group was the recipient of three of four awards at the 2016 CISC National Steel Design Awards Gala held on September 30th in Toronto.
Canam-Buildings received this award for its involvement in the Cogeco Amphitheater project in Trois-Rivières, Québec. This prestigious building with a floor area of 14,000 m2 (150,700 ft2) has received several awards since it was built. With its specially shaped beams forming a triangle at the back of the structure, the Amphitheater houses a large stage with a covered hall containing 3,500 seats. There is also an outdoor grassy hall with seating for 6,500. The project includes joists, girders and steel deck. Installation of the steel framework, including assembly engineering, was carried out by St. Lawrence Erectors, a subsidiary of Canam Group.
This award was given to the Jeanne and Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre in Camrose, Alberta. The energy-efficient building includes underfloor HVAC circulation, an upgraded insulation and building envelope, and uniform LED lighting throughout the building. In addition, the stage has 488 modules of photovoltaic cells supported by the structural steel fly tower, probably the most sustainable feature of the building. This project includes joists and steel deck.
St. Lawrence Erectors received an award for the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge in the south end of Ottawa. The bridge, which has a 143-m (469-ft) span, links Strandherd Drive to Earl Armstrong Road and crosses the Rideau River and Rideau Canal. The bridge arches rise up to 21 m (69 ft) above the roadway, and have a 125-m (410-ft) opening. The bridge has eight lanes for vehicles, two bicycle paths and two sidewalks. Goodco Z-Tech expansion joints were used for this project.
